Pulaski was named after Count Casimir Pulaski, a Polish exile who helped establish the area around the time of the Revolutionary War.
The first mill was built here in 1811, which brought more business to the growing community. Sam Davis, known as the "boy hero of the Civil War," was tried and hung as a spy here in 1863. A Civil War museum was later built at the site, and a statue on the town square and other sites also bear his name.

Giles County itself was established in 1810 at the suggestion of Gen. Jackson, and was named in honor of Gen. William B. Giles, one of the governors of Virginia. It was formed out of Maury County and is bounded on the north by Maury and Marshall counties; on the east by the counties of Marshall and Lincoln; on the south by the State of Alabama, and on the west by Lawrence County. The current courthouse was built in 1859 and was damaged during the Civil War.
